Full Synopsis Use Cases
The Air Force Research Lab Munitions Directorate (AFRL/RW) has developed a low-cost photonic crystal film that can be fastened to a curved or flat surface by an adhesive substance for the purpose of altering the optical properties of the surface. Photonic crystals are complex optical structures that are used for a variety of optical applications including anti-reflection, filtering, light deflection, reflection, absorption and dispersion. In order for a glass surface or other optical component to obtain the properties afforded by photonic crystals, the crystals must be embedded onto the glass through a costly process which requires the skills of an industry expert.

The present invention offers an elegant solution to this complex and lengthy process by creating a layer of photonic crystals with an adhesive backing that can be applied to the curved or flat surface in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This “treatment” would not require installation by an expert and is potentially reversible as the adhesive layer can be peeled off if needed. In this way, glass or plastic windows can be rapidly converted into high efficiency mirrors or optical filters.

  • Automotive: custom window tints.
  • Construction: energy efficient windows.
  • Consumer goods: clothing, sunglasses, eyeglasses.
  • Defense: camouflage or stealth capabilities.
  • Energy: solar harvesting.
